History of the ASI Jharkhand Chapter

The ASI Jharkhand Chapter was established following the formation of the state of Jharkhand on 15th November 2000. The initiative to form a separate chapter for Jharkhand was spearheaded by Dr. R. P. Srivastava, the then Honorary Secretary of the Bihar Chapter. Recognizing the need for a distinct platform for surgeons in the newly formed state, Dr. Srivastava undertook a dedicated effort to advocate for the creation of the Jharkhand State Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI).

The proposal received approval from the Governing Council (GC) of ASI during the ASICON held in Delhi. This milestone paved the way for the formal establishment of the Jharkhand State Chapter. The inaugural ceremony took place on 8th April 2001 at Bokaro, in the presence of the then National Secretary of ASI, Prof. T. Gunasagaran. This historic event marked the beginning of a new chapter for the surgical community in Jharkhand.

Achievements & Recognition

The ASI Jharkhand Chapter has actively organized numerous advocacy and public awareness campaigns, Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs, annual conferences, symposia, research grants, and scholarships. These efforts have greatly benefited both the surgical community and the public.

Our chapter received the Best Chapter Award for the first time in history in 2012 at ASICON 2012 in Kolkata and for the second time in 2024 at ASICON 2024 in Agra. Later, as the membership grew beyond 300, the chapter secured two GC members to represent ASI Jharkhand at National Level.

The eminent faculty from across the state have contributed significantly to the chapter's success, bringing it to its current stature. Their efforts and dedication deserve special recognition for elevating the ASI Jharkhand Chapter to its present glory.
